Rizal heirs keep legacy alive through Facebook

MANILA, Philippines - One hundred and fifty days before the 150th birthday of national hero Jose Rizal, his fifth generation descendant is keeping his legacy alive though Facebook.
Jerome Tirona Bautista, Rizal’s fifth generation nephew through his sister Olympia, has set up a Facebook fan page on Rizal’s works and ideas to make him relevant to the present generation.
“People could comment on these quotes and some people even translate them to different languages,” said the 31-year-old Bautista.

The page called “Rizal 150 to 150” was set up last month. Students of the University of the Philippines yesterday paid tribute to Rizal’s life and works through a 10-minute flash mob.                                                                                                 “It could be that what Rizal had envisioned has not been fulfilled,” said UP’s Dr. Gonzalo Campoamor II.
Bautista said the same “social cancer” that Rizal had written about is still present in the country.
“Based on what we’re seeing, there’s corruption (in government). There’s still the social cancer that we should address,” he said.
“We feel there’s this urgency to do something today.”
The university launched the 2011 Jose Rizal Sesquicentery Celebrations last December with the theme “Diwang Bayan: Wer n U? Paghahanap sa Diwa ni Rizal sa Kasalukuyan.”
The celebrations will include a photo exhibit of Rizal monuments in the country and abroad from April to June; an international conference entitled “Rizal in the 21st Century: Local and Global Perspectives” in June; an exhibit on the relationship of UP to Rizal’s legacy; and a launching of a Rizal instructional material in June 2012.(ThePhilippineStar)
