Cavaliers Acquire Erden and Harangody from Boston for Future Second Round Pick

(NBA) The Cleveland Cavaliers have acquired center Semih Erden and forward Luke Harangody from the Boston Celtics in exchange for a second round pick in the 2013 NBA Draft, Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant announced today. The Cavaliers also waived forward Leon Powe.

“Semih and Luke are two young players that we’ve liked dating back to their respective drafts. Each has worked hard, continued to grow and proven themselves on the court this season,” said Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant. “Luke and Semih also understand what winning culture is about and we’re happy to have them as part of our team. We look forward to their continued growth with us.”

Erden, 24, has played in 37 games (seven starts) this season, averaging 4.1 points on .598 shooting and 2.9 rebounds in 14.4 minutes per game. The 7-foot, 240-pound rookie from Turkey was selected with the 60th overall pick of the 2008 NBA Draft. He has seven seasons of international experience, playing the last five seasons (2005-2010) with Fenerbache Ulker Istanbul of the Turkish League.

With the Celtics during the 2010-11 season, he scored in double figures on four occasions and grabbed seven or more rebounds in five games this season. Semih Erden (pronounced SEM-ee Err-DEN) posted a season-high 14 points on a perfect 5-5 shooting and added seven rebounds in 30 minutes versus Utah on Jan. 21st.

Harangody, 23, is averaging 2.3 points on .394 shooting and 2.0 rebounds in 8.6 minutes per game in 28 games (zero starts). He was selected with the 52nd overall pick of the 2010 NBA Draft after receiving All-American honors and being an All-BIG EAST First Team Selection in three consecutive seasons (2008-2010), including being named BIG EAST Player of the Year in 2008, in four seasons at Notre Dame. The 6-foot-8, 246-pound power forward recorded his first NBA career double-double with 17 points on 8-11 shooting (.727) and 11 rebounds versus Toronto on Jan. 7th.

The 2013 second round pick headed to Boston was acquired by the Cavaliers from Minnesota on July 26, 2010 along with Ramon Sessions and Ryan Hollins in exchange for Sebastian Telfair and Delonte West.

Powe has played in 34 games (five starts) for the Cavaliers since being signed as a free agent before the 2009-10 season and averaged 4.4 points on .463 shooting and 2.9 rebounds in 12.4 minutes per game. “We thank Leon for his contributions on and off the court and our entire organization wishes him and his family the best in the future,” said Cavaliers General Manager Chris Grant.

Rockets sends defensive tactician Shane Battier back to Memphis for center Hasheem Thabeet, forward DeMarre Carroll and a future first-round draft pick

(NBA) Houston Rockets General Manager Daryl Morey announced today that the team has acquired center Hasheem Thabeet, forward DeMarre Carroll and a future first-round draft pick from the Memphis Grizzlies in exchange for forward/guard Shane Battier and guard Ishmael Smith.
“Shane is a winner on and off the court and his many contributions will be hard to replace,” said Morey. “His leadership and game preparation were unmatched in the league. Aaron was my first selection as a general manager and he put in a lot of hard work over the past few seasons to develop into a quality starter. We will miss them both on a professional and personal level.
“Hasheem is a recent second overall pick in the draft who addresses our need for increased size and interior defense. We view him as a young player with a large potential for growth. We have been interested in Goran dating back to the 2008 Draft. He is a tough, competitive guard with proven playoff experience who has matured into a solid point guard over the past few seasons. DeMarre is a hard-nosed player who is accustomed to playing in a fast-paced system similar to ours.”
Thabeet (7-3, 263, Connecticut) was selected by Memphis with the second overall pick in the 2009 NBA Draft. The first Tanzanian-born player to be drafted by and play for an NBA team, Thabeet has averaged 1.2 points, 1.7 rebounds and 0.33 blocks in 45 games with the Grizzlies this season. In 2009-10, Thabeet ranked second among rookies in blocks per game (1.31) and actually led the NBA in blocks per 48 minutes (4.84). He finished his rookie campaign with averages of 3.1 points and 3.6 rebounds in 13.0 minutes over 68 games (13 starts) in 2009-10. Thabeet also averaged 13.8 points, 11.2 boards and 3.17 blocks in six games (four starts) with the NBA D-League Dakota Wizards in 2009-10. At Connecticut, Thabeet was named the 2009 Co-Big East Player of the Year along with Pittsburgh’s DeJuan Blair. He was also a two-time winner of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) National Defensive Player of the Year Award in 2008 and 2009.
Carroll (6-8, 212, Missouri), who was chosen by the Grizzlies in the first round (27th overall) of the 2009 NBA Draft, has averaged 2.8 points and 2.0 rebounds in 78 career games (one start) with Memphis. He also tallied 18.3 points per game and averaged 6.8 rebounds in six games (six starts) with the D-League Dakota Wizards this season. In his rookie NBA season, Carroll averaged 2.9 points and 2.1 rebounds in 71 games (one start). As a collegiate senior in 2008-09, he led Missouri to its first Big 12 Tournament title in 16 years and a trip to the 2009 NCAA Elite Eight, earning Big 12 Tournament MVP and NCAA All-West Region honors.
Battier (6-8, 220, Duke) leaves Houston ranked third in team history in both 3-pointers made (576) and attempted (1,483). He was twice named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team (2007-08, 2008-09) over his nearly five seasons with the Rockets.
Smith (6-0, 175, Wake Forest) has averaged 2.6 points and 2.3 assists in 28 games (three starts) this season with Houston. The undrafted rookie also averaged 12.5 points, 7.9 assists, 4.3 rebounds and 1.50 steals over eight games (five starts) in a pair of stints with the D-League Rio Grande Valley Vipers this season.

Thunder Acquires Perkins and Robinson

(NBA) The Oklahoma City Thunder acquired center Kendrick Perkins and guard Nate Robinson from the Boston Celtics in exchange for forward Jeff Green, center Nenad Krstic and the Los Angeles Clippers' 2012 first-round pick, it was announced today by Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti.

(Thunder) “It is never easy to make decisions such as these and I thank Jeff and Nenad for their contributions to the Thunder organization and to this community. They define professionalism and I wish them the very best in the future,” Presti said. “We had a unique opportunity to add a proven presence in our front court in acquiring Kendrick. He will help anchor our defense while Nate will add depth and athleticism to our backcourt. We are excited to welcome them both to the Thunder organization.”

(Boston) “We are pleased to welcome Jeff and Nenad to the Celtics,” said Celtics President of Basketball Operations, Danny Ainge. “Jeff is a versatile talent on the offensive end and someone who can play multiple positions while Nenad, who is one of the better shooting big men in the league, gives us good size and length on both ends of the court.”
“We would like to thank both Kendrick and Nate for all of their contributions to the franchise both on and off the court,” said Ainge. “Perk was an integral part of our 2008 championship and we could not have asked for a better person to represent our franchise throughout his tenure with the ballclub. We wish both Nate and Kendrick nothing but the best in their future.”
Perkins (6-10, 280), an NBA champion currently in his 8th NBA season, owns career averages of 6.4 points, 6.1 rebounds, 1.4 blocks, 1.0 assist and 22.3 minutes in 454 NBA games. He has appeared in 12 games (7 starts) this season with the Celtics, averaging 7.3 points and 8.1 rebounds in 26.1 minutes. The center has appeared in 68 postseason games, averaging 6.9 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.5 blocks and 25.7 minutes.

Robinson (5-9, 180), the only three-time Slam Dunk winner in NBA history currently in his 6th NBA season, owns career averages of 11.3 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists in 393 games. He has seen action in 55 games (11 starts) this season with the Celtics, averaging 7.1 points, 1.9 assists, 1.6 rebounds in 17.9 minutes. The guard has played in 17 postseason contests, averaging 4.2 points, 1.1 assists and 7.5 minutes.

Green, a 6-9 forward, is currently averaging 15.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and 1.8 assists in 49 games this season while starting for Oklahoma City. The former Georgetown Hoya was originally drafted by the Celtics with the fifth overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft and was traded to the Seattle Supersonics along with Delonte West and Wally Szczerbiak in exchange for Ray Allen and Glen Davis. Green recorded a career-high 37 points against New Jersey this season on December 1, 2010. He has recorded 20 or more points on nine occasions this season and has recorded three double-doubles. In his fourth year in the NBA, Green has posted career averages of 14.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 289 games.
Krstic, a 7-foot center, is currently averaging 7.6 points and 4.4 rebounds in 21.7 minutes per game while starting for the Thunder. The native of Kraljevo, Serbia has recorded a season-high of 18 points against the Chicago Bulls on 12/6/10. Krstic has recorded 10 or more points on 13 occasions this season and has posted one double-double. He recorded a high of 11 rebounds against Orlando on 1/13/11. In his seventh year in the NBA, he has posted career averages of 10.1 points and 5.4 rebounds in 395 games.

Kings acquire Marquis Daniels from Celtics

(NBA) The Sacramento Kings today acquired forward-guard Marquis Daniels and cash considerations from the Boston Celtics in exchange for a protected second-round pick in the 2017 draft, according to Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie.
Daniels, in his eighth NBA season out of Auburn, appeared in 49 games for the Celtics this season, averaging 5.5 ppg (.491 FG%, .684 FT%), 2.3 rpg, and 1.3 apg, before suffering a bruised spinal cord on February 6 versus Orlando and has not seen action since then.

With Daniels likely out for the rest of the season , this may seem like a pointless trade. But it allows the Celtics to free up a roster spot and reduce their luxury tax payment by $2.4 million. They send enough cash in the deal to make it worth the Kings' trouble.

Suns Trade Goran Dragic and a Protected Pick for Aaron Brooks

(NBA) The Phoenix Suns have acquired guard Aaron Brooks from the Houston Rockets in exchange for guard Goran Dragic and a protected 2011 first-round draft pick, the team announced.
“We are excited to add Aaron Brooks to our team,” said Suns President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby. “We are confident that he will upgrade our backcourt now and in the future. He should add scoring to our second unit, which is important to our success.”
The 6-0, 161-pound Brooks is an established NBA point guard who owns career averages of 12.8 points and 3.6 assists in 247 games (124 starts). Originally selected by the Rockets with the 26th overall pick (first round) of the 2007 NBA Draft, Brooks was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player a season ago after averaging career highs of 19.6 points and 5.3 assists while starting all 82 games for Houston.
Brooks garnered the honor after registering the largest scoring increase of any NBA player (+8.4 points) last season, and leading the NBA in three-point field goals made (209). Brooks became just the sixth player in league history to tally at least 200 three-pointers and 400 assists in a single season.
The 26-year-old Brooks joins the Suns with 2010-11 averages of 11.6 points and 3.8 assists in 34 games (seven starts). After dealing with injuries early, Brooks has appeared in 21 of the Rockets’ last 22 games and has scored 15 or more points in seven of those games.
A fourth-year pro, Brooks has made two playoff appearances in his first three NBA seasons, appearing in 19 postseason contests (13 starts), and averaging 12.8 points and 2.5 assists. Brooks started all 13 playoff games for the Rockets in 2009, as Houston won a series and pushed the eventual champion Los Angeles Lakers to seven games in the semifinal round. Brooks averaged career playoff highs of 16.8 points and 3.4 assists in 2009.
A four-year performer at the University of Oregon, Brooks earned Second-Team All-America honors as a senior, and was a member of the Wooden Award All-American Team and the All-Pac-10 First Team as a senior when he led the conference in scoring (17.7).
The Suns originally acquired the draft rights to Dragic, who was the 45th overall pick (second round) of the 2009 NBA Draft, from the San Antonio Spurs in exchange for the draft rights to Malik Hairston (48th overall), a 2009 second-round pick and cash. A third-year performer from Ljubljana, Slovenia, Dragic owns career averages of 6.7 points and 2.7 assists in 183 games (five starts).

Charlotte sends Gerald Wallace to Trail Blazers for Joel Przybilla, forwards Dante Cunningham and Sean Marks

(NBA) Charlotte Bobcats General Manager Rod Higgins announced today that the team has acquired center Joel Przybilla, forwards Dante Cunningham and Sean Marks, two first-round draft picks and cash considerations from the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for Gerald Wallace.

"This was an incredibly difficult decision, but one that we thought was in the best interest of our franchise for the long term," Higgins said. "We are receiving two first-round draft picks that will help us build for our future, while also opening up opportunities for our young players and receiving pieces that will help us remain competitive in our push to make the playoffs this season. In addition, the contracts we acquired will provide us with additional financial flexibility moving forward."
A 7-1 center, Przybilla was selected by Houston with the ninth overall pick in the 2000 NBA Draft before having his rights traded to Milwaukee. In 548 NBA games with Milwaukee, Atlanta and Portland, he holds career averages of 4.1 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks, while connecting on .556 from the field. Przybilla has also appeared in 10 career postseason games with the Bucks and Trail Blazers. This season, he has appeared in 31 games (nine starts) with averages of 1.8 points and 3.9 rebounds in 14.4 minutes.
Cunningham, a 6-8 forward, was selected by Portland with the 33rd overall pick of the 2009 NBA Draft. He completed his rookie season with averages of 3.9 points and 2.5 rebounds in 11.2 minutes in 63 games. In 56 games this season (nine starts) he has posted averages of 5.1 points and 3.4 rebounds in 19.8 minutes.
The 6-10 Marks was chosen by New York with the 44th overall pick in the 1998 NBA Draft. The first native New Zealander to play in the NBA, Marks has appeared in 230 career games with Toronto, Miami, San Antonio, Phoenix, New Orleans and Portland with averages of 2.8 points and 2.2 rebounds in 9.9 minutes. During the 2004-05 season, he captured his first NBA Championship as a member of the Spurs.
Wallace was chosen by the Bobcats in the Charlotte Expansion Selection on June 22, 2004. He appeared in 454 games for Charlotte, with averages of 16.4 points, 7.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks in 36.8 minutes. He became the first Bobcats player to be named to the Eastern Conference All-Star Team in 2010 and All-Defensive First Team following the 2009-10 season. He finishes his Bobcats career as the franchise’s all-time leader in games and minutes played, points, steals, defensive rebounds, field goals, field goals attempted, free throws and free throws attempted.
"We’d like to thank Gerald Wallace for all of his contributions to this organization both on and off the floor," Higgins said. "He has been the face of this franchise for seven seasons and helped lead us to our first-ever playoff berth. His heart, passion and love for the game will be missed and we wish him continued success."
In addition, the Bobcats have waived guard Sherron Collins and forward Dominic McGuire in order to create the requisite number of roster spots.

In Anthony's world, trade speculation seems to be everywhere

MILWAUKEE (AP) -- Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony put on a gray Denver sweatshirt and a pair of pricey headphones, then sprinted for the bus. A wrong turn kept him from the door and sent him right back into a wall of questions.
The key figure in the longest-running trade story of the season is just looking for a little peace at this point. He can't watch TV, can't read the news and can't avoid the same questions he simply can't answer right now.
"I really don't know what's going to happen, to be honest with you," Anthony said during a cordial chat after a Wednesday shootaround as Denver prepared to play the Milwaukee Bucks.
Speculation on where Anthony might land keeps intensifying, with the latest rumors continuing to point to the Knicks in a blockbuster deal. Or the Nets. Or the Bulls. Or the Rockets.
Anthony said he's ready for a resolution, even though he insists he's not fretting about what might happen as the Feb. 24 trade deadline approaches.
"I know something will have to happen whether I sign the extension or whether the Nuggets move me or whatever," said Anthony, who is averaging 24.9 points this year. "Something is going to happen, so I try not to stress myself out about it."
That doesn't mean he can avoid the hours upon hours of coverage devoted to one of the NBA's biggest stars. He said he can "see" all the rumors out there, no longer needing to watch the latest television reports.
"I turn on the TV, and I turn it right back off because it's always something, it's always a new team, always a rumor, always this person saying that, that person saying this," he said. "I try not to pay attention to it."
Nuggets coach George Karl believes he, Anthony and the organization all want the same thing, and that Denver will have cap space this offseason to build around the superstar if he stayed.
"I think sometimes he thinks he can be better someplace else. As a competitor, I'd say, 'I think you're wrong. I think the best place for you to be is Denver,"' Karl said. "We'll have space, we'll have the ability to make maneuvers, we'll have versatility in our roster for the first time in at least four or five years next year.
"But unfortunately, free agency, we're at the point where we're at the whim of what's going to happen."
Karl described it as a "weird karma" to be talking about Anthony's status every day and that he probably doesn't tell Anthony about the advantages of staying in Denver enough.
Anthony said his thoughts keep turning to a murky future that he hopes begins to clear in a few days. But first, he'll have to get past at least one more major session with the media over the All-Star break.
"I know they're going to be looking to talk to me. And I'm going to be in L.A. for the All-Star weekend and every media outlet is going to be there, so it's going to be a 'MeloWatch,' I guess," he said.

Bobcats remove Paul Silas' interim tag, give him extension

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) -- The Bobcats removed the interim tag from coach Paul Silas on Wednesday, rewarding him with a one-year extension after he helped get Charlotte into playoff contention following a miserable start under Larry Brown.
"It's a very exciting day for me knowing I'll be here this year and next year and have a chance to really make this team special," Silas said at a news conference. "There's a long way to go, but we're getting there."
Owner Michael Jordan's decision comes less than two months after he fired Brown following Charlotte's 9-19 start that left a fractured team. Guard Stephen Jackson said a change was needed because "nobody wanted to play" for the demanding Brown, who had routinely criticized his players.
The 67-year-old Silas brought a calming influence and a more uptempo, free-flowing style. He's led the Bobcats to a 15-13 mark to get within one game of the Indiana Pacers for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.
ilas believes the Bobcats have a "very good shot" at making the postseason for the second straight season.
"My main goal when I took this job was to change the atmosphere, change the attitude and make the team more confident," Silas said. "I think we've begun to accomplish those goals."
Silas had been out of the NBA for five years and survived a health scare two years ago that left him with life-threatening blood clots. Healthy again, he's been able to turn a temporary position into a permanent job for the second time in Charlotte with two franchises.
Silas was interim coach of the Charlotte Hornets in 1999 after Dave Cowens quit before getting the job full-time. Silas pulled off the feat again with the Bobcats, although he received just a one-year extension through the 2011-12 season.
"I think from ownership on down, we want to give Paul every opportunity to be successful, he and his staff," general manager Rod Higgins said. "But by the same token, we see the short term improvement."
Silas said he has no problems getting only a one-year commitment.
"That wasn't a concern at all or I wouldn't have taken the job with the interim tag," Silas said. "Now that we've got another year, that's a blessing as far as I'm concerned. It gives us more stability. The players understand now that we're going to be around at least the rest of this year and one more year and they have to buy in."
Several players have blossomed under Silas' guidance, including point guard D.J. Augustin and shooting guard Gerald Henderson. Charlotte also has wins over the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers in the past two weeks.
Higgins said Silas has been "a joy to work with." Silas has won over his players, too, despite being out of coaching since the Cleveland Cavaliers fired him in 2005.
"Most coaches that take over as an interim don't have a winning record because the players know that he is temporary, mostly. They don't listen and it's a downer," Silas said. "But here I came in and established the way we wanted to play.
"I think the main thing is the players changed the way they were playing. From walking the ball up the court to running it up, establishing themselves shooting the basketball much better and having some fun playing."
Silas, a bruising rebounder who played 16 seasons in the NBA, acknowledged there was a time he never thought he'd coach again.
Silas developed blood clots in his left leg in 2008 that led to a six-week stay in intensive care in which he said he "nearly died twice." Blood thinners helped eliminate the clots, but Silas had to turn down an interview offer from the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009 because of his health.
Silas said he turned the corner about a year ago, but wouldn't have taken any other job because he was living in a home north of Charlotte. Silas still walks slowly and uses a special chair on the bench with arms that help him stand and sit.
"I know that was a concern of Mike and Rod," Silas said of his health. "I haven't had any problems at all. If problems arise, we'll have to make some decisions."
Silas indicated he has a good relationship with Jordan, who hasn't publicly answered questions on his decision to fire Brown. Jordan also didn't attend Wednesday's news conference.
But Jordan, who has a checkered history as an executive, has been more active around the team of late as he neared a decision on Silas. Jordan even practiced with the team last week.

Grizzlies' Gay (shoulder) leaves game vs. 76ers

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) -- Memphis forward Rudy Gay, the team's second-leading scorer, left Tuesday night's game against the Philadelphia 76ers in the second quarter with a left shoulder injury.
Memphis officials said at halftime that Gay was not expected to return to the game.
Gay, who averages 20.0 points and 6.3 rebounds, was injured with 5:29 left before halftime as he drove across the lane. He was fouled by Evan Turner, and was on the court in pain after the foul.
Memphis called timeout, and Gay returned to the game only long enough to shoot the free throws - one-handed, unable to lift his left arm.
He made one of two free throws to give Memphis a 41-26 lead before play was stopped on a foul by Mike Conley to get Gay out of the game
